I am a painter and creator who enjoys vibrant colors. People are a joy to paint and I love to tell a story with each portrait I create. Living in New Mexico and the Southwest always provides a wonderful opportunity to see the beauty of many cultures, nature, all four seasons and there's so much to see and capture on a canvas. I also have the opportunity to teach children and adults painting and creating art. I say that art is a privilege and a passion of mine.
StatementMy Original Acrylic and Collage Painting for "Los Vivos y Los Muertos" expresses a tradition that was mostly talked about through my Mother's life in Mexico. Even after coming the United States, when November arrived, the stories of my Mother's memories of many happy times was shared with her children. Her loved ones, her faith, the flowers, the foods and so many traditions came to life. I felt that a glimpse of Frida Kahlo's life could be captured in this one artwork. It shows her living and breathing and those things that were so close to her heart--the love of her life, Diego Rivera, her beloved monkeys, the Xoloitzchintli Xolo or(Mexican Hairless Dog) which Aztec mythology believed served as a soul-guide for the dead and that protected homes from intruders and evil spirits. The flowers in vibrant colors speak of the essence of the Mexican culture's reverence for the afterlife. Because their fragrance and brilliant appearance is believed to attract the spirits, guiding them to be remembered by their families. The orange trimmed window shows the plot of a cemetery of Fridas loved ones. The moon is shining down with a visible glow on a special night.
